The tan lines you get from a spray tan will depend on what you choose to wear during your session. If you go fully nude, you’ll achieve an all-over, seamless tan with no lines. Wearing a bikini, bra, or underwear will create tan lines in those areas, similar to a natural sun tan. Some clients opt for a strapless top or thong-style bottoms to minimize lines, while others embrace traditional swimwear lines for a beach-ready look. If you wear socks, tight shoes, or snug clothing immediately after your spray tan, you may also risk unwanted marks or smudging. It’s always best to plan ahead and choose what works best for your personal preferences and desired results!

The time before rinsing your spray tan depends on the type of solution used:

Standard Spray Tan: Wait 6-8 hours before rinsing to allow the DHA to fully develop. Avoid sweating or getting wet during this time.

Rapid/Express Spray Tan: Can be rinsed in 3-6 hours, depending on how deep you want the color. The longer you wait, the darker your tan will be.

For both types, your first rinse should be with lukewarm water only—no soap, scrubbing, or shaving. The tan will continue to develop over the next 24 hours after rinsing.

DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) is the active ingredient in spray tans that creates the tan effect on your skin. It is a colorless, plant-derived sugar that reacts with the amino acids in the top layer of your skin, producing a natural-looking bronze glow. This process, called the Maillard reaction, is similar to how a sliced apple turns brown when exposed to air. DHA develops over several hours, typically reaching its full color within 12-24, depending on the formula used. It's hours a safe, FDA-approved ingredient for external use and provides a sunless tan without harmful UV exposure.

For your spray tan appointment, wear loose, dark-colored clothing to avoid rubbing or staining. Opt for something like a flowy dress, oversized T-shirt, or baggy sweatpants. Avoid tight clothing, including bras, leggings, or anything with elastic bands that could cause lines or smudging. If you prefer a tan line-free result, you can wear disposable underwear or go nude during the session. Also, choose open-toed sandals or flip-flops to prevent smudging on your feet. After your tan, avoid touching your skin and let the solution fully develop before showering.

With the correct prep and aftercare you can expect a beautiful tan for 7-10 days.
